D. Quali sono le origine della lavorazione della cartapesta nelle tua famiglia?

R. La lavorazione della cartapesta è cominciata con Raffale Pentasuglia fratello di mio nonno.
Il primo carro nella mia famiglia è stato realizzato nel 1923 da Raffele, mio prozio.
D. Da chi ha appreso il tuo prozio Raffele P. l’arte della cartapesta? Ha lavorato con altri cartapestai?
R. No, è stato un’autodidatta. Lui era il figlio grande nella famiglia di mio nonno, il primo di 4 fratelli; mio nonno lo aiutava soprattutto nella pittura. Non hanno appreso da altri, in realtà la famiglia Pentasuglia ha sempre avuto una vena artistica ed una curiosità nel fare arte che li ha portati ad inventare le proprie tecniche e manualità. Queste sono scaturite sicuramente dalla creatività delle persone che mi hanno preceduto.
Noi parliamo ora di abilità nel fare la cartapesta, ma in realtà la persona che si dedica a quest’arte deve sapere fare altre: deve saper lavorare l’argilla con la quale creare le varie sculture che si vogliono aggiungere al carro. Dai lavori in argilla si creano poi dei calchi in gesso che saranno quindi il negativo per fare gli elaborati in cartapesta.
Questo mio prozio era molto bravo a lavorare l’argilla. I carri fatti in precedenza (prima del 1923) erano molto spogli, e piccoli, addobbati solo con ornate, Raffaele è stato il primo ad abbellire il carro con statue. Lui ha cominciato a cambiare la modalità con cui si faceva il carro sino a quel momento.




Which are the origin of the papier machè tradition in your family?
Raffale Pentasuglia, brother of my grandfather, started to realize papier machè works. The first cart was realized by him in 1923 by Raffele.
Has Raffele learned this art from someone else?
No, he was a self made artist. He was the great child the family of my grandfather, the first one of 4 brothers; my grandfather helped him in painting. They did not learned from others, in reality the Pentasuglia family has always had an artistic vein and a curiosity in art that brought them to create their own techniques and to improve their manual skills. All the people that preceded me were very creative.
We now speak about the ability in making “cartapesta”, but in reality the person that dedicates himself to this art has to know how to do other things: he has to know how to work with clay in order to create the sculptures that have to be fixed on the cart. It is from the items done with clay that you can obtain a mould in chalk which is used as a negative in the papier machè technique!
This uncle of mine was very skilled in working with clay. The carts done before 1923) were very bare, and small and decorated only with simple decorations. Raffaele has been the first one to embellish the cart with statues. He has started to change the manner used till that moment to realize the carts.
